For many people, summer, a holiday by the sea, or simply a visit to the swimming pool is not a source of joy but of serious stress. If you feel tightness in your chest, a racing heart, or panic at the mere thought of your feet not touching the bottom — it is important to know that this experience has an explanation and, more importantly, a solution.
Aquaphobia often makes us feel isolated while those around us are having fun. Yet it is not simply a "lack of courage" — it is a protective reaction of the nervous system that requires understanding and the right strategy, not force.
Fear of water can now be overcome. And the key does not lie in "just jumping into the deep end", but in the science of the human mind.
What Is Aquaphobia?
Aquaphobia is an irrational and persistent fear of water. It often differs from ordinary caution. It is a protective reaction of the nervous system that may be triggered by a past traumatic experience, a lack of early socialisation with water, or even a fear passed down from a parent.
The biggest mistake people make is trying to learn to swim while still experiencing this fear. It is impossible to teach your body technique while your mind is in survival mode.
Why Is the Combination of Psychology and Swimming So Effective?
As a specialist, I believe that water is a mirror of our inner states. I am delighted that through my work I am able to combine psychology with the aquatic environment, because this is the only way to achieve lasting change.
When we approach fear through the lens of psychology, we do not fight it — we understand it. Rather than telling you "relax, nothing will happen to you", I use the internationally recognised ALP methodology (Aquaphobia Learning Programme), developed by The Institute of Aquaphobia (IOA) and certified by the British Institute Safety Training Awards (STA).
How Does My Programme Work?
My goal is not to teach you the correct crawl or breaststroke. My goal is to teach you how to feel safe.
The process includes:
- Desensitisation: Gradual and gentle exposure to the aquatic environment, without any pressure.
- Reprogramming the mind: Replacing panicked thoughts with a sense of control.
- Body mastery: Working on breathing and muscle relaxation, which are the foundation of buoyancy.
What Is the Difference Between a Swimming Coach and an Aquaphobia Coach?
While a swimming coach focuses on speed, technique and results, an Aquaphobia Coach focuses on you.
- We do not rush.
- We do not skip stages.
- We celebrate the small victory — like putting your face in the water or simply relaxing your shoulders while in the pool.
Fear of water is not something you have to live with for the rest of your life. It is simply a barrier waiting to be removed with the right understanding and professional support.
If you are ready to replace fear with calm and discover the freedom that water can bring, I am here to guide you through this process — step by step, from the mind to the body.
